Lemon Verbena – Great Lemon Flavor & Aroma!
Lemon verbena is a hardy, perennial herb that’s great for adding lemon flavoring to a multitude of dishes. Closer in flavor to lemon zest but with a stronger aroma, Lemon verbena leaves and edible flowers are great additions to meats, jellies, rice, beverages, desserts, syrups, and salad dressings to name a few. Used fresh, steeped, ground, or steamed, Lemon verbena is also great for infusing flavor into oils, vinegars, and brines. But wait there’s more! Lemon verbena’s aromatic qualities make it a wonderful lemony addition to lotions, soaps, and potpourris. Native to South America, the Lemon verbena will lose its leaves in colder climes during the winter. If you want to harvest year round, bring the plant inside and keep in a sunny spot. Lemon verbena is shrubby in growth and can grow to 6 ft tall with a 6-8 ft spread, but is easily kept smaller with pruning. Zones 8-11.
