A page about Onions!

Spring 2008 shipping has ended. Now taking preorders for Fall 2008 shipping.

We've recently been fascinated bu several types of onions and their relatives. We all know the white, yellow and red ones at the grocery store, but have you considered the other possibilities?

Egyptian Walking Onion (Allium spp.)

You'll have to see this to believe it. Reproduces by flopping over and setting bulbs next to the main plant. Appears to "walk" in this way. Two varieties to choose from and a lifetime of green onions! Zones 7-10. $9.99 1 gal (1-2ft).

CATAWISSA The biggest of the walking onions at 2 1/2 inches wide- easy to stuff with cream cheese for a delicious appetizer. These are known to set top-sets on top of top-sets (blooms from the blooms) and the extra top-sets are excellent pickled or thrown into salads. What a great plant! Zones 5-10.

Sorry, not available at this time. HERITAGE SWEET Like Catawissa but even more prolific, creating even more scallions per bulb. Tops can be harvested from late summer to the next spring. Usually dormant in the late summer heat when they can be harvested as pearl onions for cooking, pickling or adding to your martini.

Tohono O'odham Iitoi's Shallot
(Allium cep aggregatum)

We have the Tohono O'odham (Pima) indians of southern Arizona and Mexico to thank for this light purple shallot-like onion with copper skin. Produces 20-30 strong-flavored cloves per blub. Planted and grown like garlic, it produces offshoots for most of the year. Requires full sun, but uses 1/3 less water than other onions.

Tai Jiu Chives (Allium tuberosum)

Chinese (or garlic) chives have been cultivated for over 2000 years. Tai Jiu is a variety selected for flowers and the stalks and buds are tender and garlicky. Flower stalks are harvested from late spring to fall, while leaves can be picked until hard frost. Useful in stir frys, salads or for general seasoning. $9.99 1 gal (1ft).
