Scarlet Soft Pear – One of the Best!
This pear was given to us as a start from permaculture designer Sissy Taylor-Maloy and her husband Noah Maloy. Scarlet is an old soft pear that has been in their family for several generations. The original tree stands on their farm in the community of Fanlew which is sited in Southwest Jefferson County, Florida. Their multi-generation farm is in the middle of what was, formerly the settlement of Delph in the early 1900’s, which later became Fanlew. Delph was a logging town in its heyday, a thriving town with two railroad lines, saw mills and turpentine stills, a boarding house, churches, and many small shanty shacks lining the dirt roads. The people lived hard off the land and the Maloy/Grantham family made a living free ranging cows and hogs, farming, and they ran the local country store. Noahs family has lived in the area for over 150 years, and the remains of his grandparents old homestead (1905) and the little country store they operated are in the middle of Noah and Sissys homestead. We’ve tested Scarlet in our orchard and have found it to be one of the very best southern soft pears we’ve run across. The flavor is unique, sweet and spicy, with a honey like aroma. Its texture is very soft and has few grit cells. Fruit ripens mid-August. Pollinate with GOLDEN BOY, KEIFFER, LE CONTE, ORIENT, SOUTHERN BARTLETT or TENNS. Zones 8A-9A.
