Here in the deep south we are not able to grow English walnuts, but instead are blessed with a native walnut known as the Black Walnut. Highly prized for the wood as well as the nuts, Black Walnuts will grow well anywhere pecans will. The trees are stately growers offering good deep shade to laze about under on a hot summer day. The nuts take a hammer to get into but the meat is by far the best flavored of all the nuts. My sister makes some mean fudge brownies with them, that are to die for. Black walnuts are considered self fertile, but will bear better with another tree planted near by.
